Richard J. Harrington is president and chief executive officer of The Thomson Corporation. Thomson is a leading global provider of integrated information solutions to business and professional customers in the sectors of law, tax, accounting, financial services, scientific research and healthcare.
Since his appointment as CEO in October 1997, Mr. Harrington has led the transformation of Thomson from a diverse holding company into a focused provider of integrated information solutions.
Mr. Harrington has held a number of key leadership positions during his Thomson career, including president and chief executive officer of Thomson Newspapers; president and chief executive officer of Thomson Professional Publishing, a provider of business information for legal, tax and accounting professionals; president and chief executive officer of Mitchell International, a leading supplier of information for the automotive and insurance industries; and president of Thomson & Thomson, the leading international trademark and copyright research firm. He joined Thomson in 1982 in Boston, Massachusetts.
In addition to serving on The Thomson Corporation's board of directors, Mr. Harrington serves on the boards of directors of Xerox Corporation (NYSE: XRX) and the Norwalk Community College Foundation, and is a member of the board of trustees for The Connecticut Center for Science & Exploration. Mr. Harrington also serves on the advisory boards of the William F. Achtmeyer Center for Global Leadership at Dartmouth's Tuck Business School, the College of Business Administration at the University of Rhode Island (URI) and URI's President's Council.
Mr. Harrington holds a B.S. degree in accounting from the University of Rhode Island. In 2002, he was also presented an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from URI. Mr. Harrington began his professional career with Arthur Young & Co., where he became a licensed C.P.A. |
