Rick Cummings was Senior Class President of Cloverdale High School. He graduated in the spring of 1969. During high school, he developed an interest in broadcasting. Rick got a job doing play by play on a Greencastle FM radio station for Cloverdale High School (and other area schools) basketball games.
It was that taste of play by play that led to a desire to get into broadcasting, with the ambition of being the voice of a professional sports team. He enrolled at Butler University, majoring in Radio/Television in 1969.
At Butler, he covered Bulldog football and basketball games doing play by play at home and around the country.
The realization that there are only about 50 of the jobs on the planet, forced him to take a broader look at the broadcast business.
Graduated Magna Cum Laude from Butler University in 1973. Major, Radio/Television. Minor, Journalism.
1973 - 1981 On-air at WFMS, Indianapolis; Talk Show Host at WTIC, Hartford and WSMB, New Orleans; Program Director at WNTS, News Talk in Indianapolis.
1981 - Joined Emmis Broadcasting as first Program Director at flagship WENS, Indianapolis.
1984 - Became National Program Director for Emmis, overseeing WENS, Indianapolis; WLOL, Minneapolis; KSHE, St. Louis and Magic 106, Los Angeles.
1987 - Became Executive VP, Programming for Emmis overseeing programming at 11-station group. Designed format for and signed on KPWR, Power 106, Los Angeles in 1986, as well as signed-on Hot 97 (WQHT, New York) and country’s first all-sports station, WFAN, New York in 1987.
1991 - While maintaining corporate duties, moved to Los Angeles to assume on-site program director duties at Power 106. Station returned to number one ratings and established the Knowledge is Power Foundation, raising over one million dollars for programs benefiting the youths of Los Angeles. Returned to corporate duties full-time in spring of 1996 for Emmis.
2002 - Became President Radio Division of Emmis Communications.
Resides in Glendale, California with wife, Martha and two children - Kate and Gabriel. |
