Richard Gephardt Biography :

Congressman Gephardt served as Majority Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives and has been one of the nation's most respected politicians for much of the last two decades. An expert on economic issues, foreign affairs and an eloquent voice for fairness, justice and opportunity for every American, he worked tirelessly in Congress to promote economic and personal security by strengthening bedrock commitments to the American people, especially Medicare and Social Security.

Mr. Gephardt retired from the U.S. Congress in 2005 to found Gephardt and Associates, LLC, a privately held strategic consulting and public policy development firm. He is also currently a consultant to Goldman Sachs, FTI Consulting and Senior Counsel at DLA Piper Law Firm.He is Honorary Chairman of The Gephardt Institute for Public Service at Washington University in St. Louis, formed with the purpose of providing strategic business consulting, public policy development, capital acquisition and labor relations assistance to companies across the world and multiple industries, allowing them to better compete in the global marketplace.

He was first elected to represent Missouri's Third Congressional District in 1976. As a House freshman, he was given the rare opportunity of serving on both the Ways and Means and Budget Committees, where he became a national leader on health care, trade and tax fairness. In 1984, Mr. Gephardt was elected Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, the fourth-ranking leadership position in the House. In 1987, he became the first Democratic candidate to enter the 1988 presidential race, where he won the Iowa Democratic Caucus and helped frame the economic issues that dominated the election. In 1989, he was elected by his colleagues in the House to serve as their Majority Leader and in 2003. Mr. Gephardt joined the 2004 presidential race, where he helped define the issues of the election.

For nearly two decades, Mr. Gephardt has been an outspoken advocate for issues of economic fairness and opportunity for every American family. He is also a leading voice for American values around the world and has traveled widely, conferring with Nobel Laureates Kim Dae Jung, Yitzhak Rabin, Vaclav Havel and Nelson Mandela.
