Richard A. Barrett is a partner in the firm's Chicago office, and has been a defense attorney since 1976 and is a member of the firm's Executive Committee. Mr. Barrett has practiced at Cassiday Schade LLP since 1980 where his primary focus has been the defense of a wide variety of professional liability cases. Mr. Barrett has been the first chair defense attorney in more than 35 cases and has appeared in 7 counties. Mr. Barrett has extensive experience in all phases of litigation including analyzing cases and developing a defense strategy in a variety of practice areas including medical malpractice, products liability, construction law, general negligence cases, and commercial litigation. Mr. Barrett's litigation experience includes appellate review. He has briefed and/or argued multiple cases in the appellate courts of three districts in the State of Illinois. Mr. Barrett has frequently lectured to groups of professionals to assist in risk management in their respective fields. He has addressed dental societies, attorneys, therapists and social workers specializing in child abuse. He has made a presentation to a group of dentists and lawyers at the Midwest Professional Conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. He has also published an article in the Journal of American Medical Record Association discussing the potential liability of hospitals: Apparent Agency: How Can Hospitals Combat the Appearance?. He has been published in the DuPage County Bar Association Journal on the statutory and common law trends in governing the physician-patient privilege. Recently, Mr. Barrett was an invited lecturer and faculty member for a four-week trial preparation course sponsored by the DuPage County Bar Association. He has also been appointed a Special Assistant Attorney General by Roland Burris, then the Attorney General for the State of Illinois. Recognizing the importance of settlement when the case warrants it, Mr. Barrett was certified by the DuPage County Bar Association as an Arbitrator and was Chair Eligible, which allowed him to serve as the main arbitrator in a panel of three arbitrators. Mr. Barrett has been the featured presenter at two risk management seminars for Illinois State Medical/Illinois Provider Trust: on April 3, 2001, he spoke to staff physicians at Riverside Hospital in Kankakee on the state of the Medical Studies Act; on April 30, 2002, he addressed the medical and nursing staffs at Morris Hospital on the JCAHO new patient safety standards. |
