Renier De La Portilla Biography :

BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE: Born, raised, and educated in Miami, Florida, Renier has had a long history of political and civic involvement in his community. In 1996, after working on many local, state and national political campaigns in his youth, Renier was elected in his own right to the Miami-Dade County School Board, becoming the youngest person to hold that office in his County's history. As a School Board Member, Renier chaired the Board's $4 billion Budget Committee and sponsored the nation's first drug-testing program for high school students. In 1998, Renier was tapped by Florida Education Commissioner Tom Gallagher to serve on the Education Practices Commission, a quasi-judicial body overseeing teacher certification. Professionally Renier put his Master's in Public Administration to good use, consulting on projects for corporate clients such as AT&T and The Rouse Corporation, as well as consulting on successful political campaigns for Congressman E. Clay Shaw's Re-election and Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio's first election to the Florida House. Renier was also elected to the Florida House of Representatives for District 115 in that election, where he served from 2000-2002. As a State Representative, Renier, was the chairman of the Education Innovation Committee and served on the Telecommunications, Health Promotion, and Fiscal Policy Committees. It was during that time that he decided to attend Nova Southeastern University's Shepard Broad Law Center and earn his Law Degree. Renier was awarded a full scholarship to Nova, and earned his J.D. in 2004. As a law student, Renier had the opportunity to study a semester abroad in San Jose, Costa Rica, where he earned "The Book Award" in International Law. In San Jose, Renier interned for "FECON", a nongovernmental organization, for which he visited Costa Rican residents, commercial centers, and schools to develop recycling and conservation programs. After doing his law internship for a personal injury law firm in Tallahassee, Renier worked for Citrus Health Network in Hialeah as Special Projects Administrator from 2003-2006. He also consulted the community mental health service provider on legal and legislative issues. Recently, Renier returned to the Miami-Dade School Board when he was elected without opposition to represent the 200,000 residents who live in School Board District 5. Renier joined the Fort Lauderdale Office of GrayRobinson in November 2006 as a Public Affairs Consultant. EDUCATION: Florida International University, B.S.
