As executive vice president of Exelon Corporation, Mehrberg, 50, heads up corporate strategy and is responsible for mergers, acquisitions and divestitures. In addition, he serves as Exelon's chief legal and ethics officer. Mehrberg led Exelon’s merger negotiations with Public Service Enterprise Group and he currently serves as Exelon’s chief merger integration officer. In that capacity, Mehrberg is responsible for establishing the structural and operational groundwork for the combined company; overseeing and coordinating the merger approval process; and closing the transaction. In his expanded role as chief administrative officer, Mehrberg now also has responsibility for communications and Exelon’s shared services company, which includes supply, information technology, accounts payable and payroll. Mehrberg serves on Exelon’s strategy and policy committee, risk management committee, and the corporate citizenship review committee, as well as on the board of directors for Exelon Business Services Company. Mehrberg joined Exelon in 2000.
Prior to joining Exelon, Mehrberg was an equity partner at the Chicago law firm of Jenner & Block, where he had a broad based litigation and transaction practice. Mehrberg counseled large and small corporations and individuals, and maintained a very active pro bono practice on behalf of not-for-profit organizations and indigent individuals. Mehrberg also held interim general counsel appointments for several of his clients. From 1993-1997, Mehrberg took a leave from Jenner & Block to serve as the lakefront director and general counsel of the Chicago Park District, where he managed 1,000 employees and the operations and facilities on Chicago’s lakefront, including Soldier Field, nine harbors, four downtown parking garages, six golf courses, the Lincoln Park Zoo and concessions.
Mehrberg serves on the board of Nuclear Electric Insurance Limited. He also serves on the boards of the Museum of Science & Industry, the Lincoln Park Zoo and the Latin School of Chicago. In addition, Mehrberg serves as vice chairman of the Northwestern University Law School Corporate Counsel Institute. He also volunteers in numerous community and civic activities. In 2001, he was awarded the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund Legal Services Award for his pro bono efforts. In addition, the Chicago Bar Association, Catholic Charities, HOPE Fair Housing, the City of Chicago, the American Civil Liberties Union, the American Society of Landscape Architects, the American Recreation Association, and the National Recreation and Park Association have recognized him for his civic and volunteer contributions.
Mehrberg earned his law degree in 1980 from the University of Michigan, where he serves on the Law School’s Committee of Visitors, and a bachelor’s degree in economics, magna cum laude, from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1977.
