Phil Emery was named the Falcons Director of College Scouting on May 18, 2004. He took on added responsibilities during draft preparation in 2005 with the departure of assistant general manager Tim Ruskell to Seattle. Emery came to the Falcons after a six-year stay as an area scout with the Chicago Bears from 1998 thru 2004. In addition, he was responsible for the final grading, statistical evaluation, chart design and point system creation for all athletic testing items on all of the Bears' draft eligible prospects from 1999 until 2001.
Emery performed numerous other duties within the Bears' scouting department, including the cross check evaluation of all offensive tackles and tight ends (2001-2004), wide receivers (1998-2001) and the recruitment and signing of undrafted free agents from the southeast (1999-2004) and northeast (1998-99) regions of the country.
Prior to joining the Bears, Emery served for seven years (1991-98) as the Director of Strength and Conditioning Services and an Associate Professor at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. In that capacity, Emery was responsible for the development, organization, administration and supervision of all strength and conditioning activities for 4,000 Midshipmen. In 1996, his program helped the Midshipmen football team to its first winning season in 15 years. Emery joined the U.S. Naval Academy from the University of Tennessee, where he was the Assistant Strength and Conditioning coach for four years (1987-91).
Emery's other coaching stopovers have included Central Michigan (graduate asst., 1981-82), Western New Mexico (head strength and conditioning, offensive line coach, 1982-84), Georgetown College (defensive line, 1984-85) and Saginaw Valley State (head strength and conditioning, defensive line 1985-87).
Emery holds a bachelor's degree in physical education from Wayne State and a master's degree in secondary education from Western New Mexico.
