Peter MacKinnon is general manager of Nortel's WiMAX and Wireless Mesh Business Unit, in addition to being chairman of LG-Nortel Co. Ltd - a joint venture between Nortel and LG Electronics in Korea.
In his general manager role, MacKinnon has full accountability for driving the global success of Nortel's WiMAX and Wireless Mesh businesses. A key thrust is to accelerate the adoption of a WiMAX ecosystem solution to drive revenues for carriers, infrastructure, devices and chipset manufacturers. With oversight of both business units, MacKinnon is focused on delivery of end-to-end wireless broadband solutions that are synergist to both WiMAX and wireless mesh technologies.
MacKinnon is also chairman of the board, LG-Nortel Co. Ltd - a joint venture between Nortel and LG Electronics, signed under his leadership in August, 2005. As chairman, MacKinnon is responsible for charting the strategy for this multi-hundred million dollar start-up; this involves coordinating the LG-Nortel and Nortel portfolios across the enterprise, Metro Ethernet, wireline and wireless business units as well as magnifying the success of the joint venture by scaling its products for Nortel's global channels.
Prior to these positions, MacKinnon was president, GSM/UMTS Networks for Nortel. In that role, he led the global Wireless GSM/UMTS business with a customer base in over 100 countries and was fully accountable for the business, R&D, product management, sales, marketing and customer support.
MacKinnon previously served as Nortel's senior vice president, Wireless Networks Americas, responsible for product sales and marketing. Prior to assuming this role in early 2000, he spent three years as vice-president and general manager of Nortel's wireless business unit for the Asia-Pacific region, based in Singapore. During that time, he and his team tripled wireless business in the region.
Prior to joining the AP team, MacKinnon was based in Paris with global responsibility for the product management and marketing efforts of Nortel's GSM networks business which grew 10-fold, to over $1B, under his direction. Before this, he was stationed in London and was responsible for global ETSI Transport Networks. He has also held positions in the North American SONET Transport Group - in product management, marketing, operations and design.
MacKinnon was also a director on the Board of Guangdong Nortel Telecommunications Equipment Ltd (GDNT) in China.
MacKinnon earned an MBA as well as a Bachelor of Science. degree in electrical engineering from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. He is fluent in English and French and enjoys experiencing different cultures. He also plays golf, ice hockey, and tennis. MacKinnon and his wife have two daughters and a son.
He is currently based in Richardson, Texas.
