Peter Kalikow Biography :

As chairman of the MTA, Peter S. Kalikow heads an organization that provides mass transit to nearly 8 million subway, bus, and commuter rail riders each weekday, more than 2.3 billion each year, and through MTA Bridges and Tunnels moves nearly 300 million vehicles a year.

Mr. Kalikow is president of H.J. Kalikow & Co., LLC, one of New York City’s leading real estate firms. He began his career in real estate in 1967 and became president of H.J. Kalikow & Co. in 1973. Following his father’s death in 1982, he assumed responsibility for all Kalikow holdings. Mr. Kalikow is the third generation to preside over his family’s 75-year-old real estate company.

Mr. Kalikow previously served on the MTA board in 1994, upon the recommendation of Governor Mario M. Cuomo. In 1995, he was appointed a commissioner of the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey by Governor George E. Pataki. The Port Authority owns and operates the region’s three major airports, bi-state New York/New Jersey bridge and tunnel crossings, port districts, the PATH commuter rail system, and, at the time of his appointment, the World Trade Center.

Mr. Kalikow is the former owner and publisher of the New York Post, the oldest daily newspaper in America, founded by Alexander Hamilton in 1801.

He is an active participant in real estate industry associations and is also involved in civic affairs and numerous religious and philanthropic efforts.

In the real estate industry, Mr. Kalikow is a governor of the Real Estate Board of New York. He was co-chair of the Board of Governors of the Associated Builders and Owners of Greater New York, which gave him the Young Master Builder Award in 1980 and the Golden Circle Award in 1981. He has also served as director of the Rent Stabilization Association, the Real Estate Board of New York, and the Realty Foundation of New York. In 1982 he received the annual award of the Concrete Industry Board of New York and the Award for Excellence from the Building Owners and Managers Association of Greater New York for the development of 101 Park Avenue in New York City.

Mr. Kalikow’s additional professional accomplishments include serving, from 1981 to 1986, as a member of the board of directors and chairman of the Mortgage Insurance Division of the New York State Mortgage Agency. He has also served as special advisor to U.S. Senator Alfonse D’Amato.

Mr. Kalikow’s civic achievements and awards are numerous. He is a trustee of the New York-Presbyterian Hospital. In May 1997, the Peter and Mary Kalikow Pediatric Intensive Care Unit was established at New York Hospital. He is also a member of the board of trustees of the New York Holocaust Museum and has served on the board of directors of the Jewish National Fund. In 1995, he received the Jerusalem 3000 Award from the State of Israel Bonds for his efforts as general chairman, Real Estate Division of Israel Bonds for the last eight years.

In 1982, Mr. Kalikow was given the Peace Medal, the State of Israel’s highest civilian award, for his many years in aiding that nation’s development. In 1987, he was honored by the American Jewish Committee with their Humanitarian Award. In 1989, the Anti-Defamation League awarded Mary and Peter Kalikow the first annual Jacob K. Javits Award for Outstanding Accomplishment.

Mr. Kalikow is a member of the board of trustees of Hofstra University. He received the university’s Alumni of the Year Award in 1988 and was awarded an honorary doctorate of law degree in 1986. He was also a member of the board of trustees at Marymount College from 1985 to 1995.

Born in New York City, Mr. Kalikow received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from Hofstra University in 1965. He is married to the former Mary Typaldos Jacobatos, and they have two children.
