Peter Stern Biography :

After obtaining his B.A. and J.D. from Columbia University, where he was writing and research editor for the Columbia Journal of Law and Social Problems, Mr. Stern clerked for Judge Edward R. Neaher of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York. Mr. Stern is admitted to the Bar of the State of New York; the Bar of the United States District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York; the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, Third Circuit and the Federal Circuit; and the United States Supreme Court.

Prior to joining McLaughlin & Stern as Counsel, Mr. Stern was a partner in the firm of Berger Stern & Webb (and its predecessor firms) for many years. Prior to that, he was associated with Winthrop Stimson Putnam & Roberts.

Mr. Stern maintains a general practice and has been involved with legal matters in many fields, including corporate, trusts and estates and real estate. In particular, Mr. Stern specializes in litigation, especially commercial and contractual disputes.

Mr. Stern is equally active in representing plaintiffs and defendants in both federal and state courts and has represented a number of nationally known entities and persons.

Mr. Stern’s general practice includes a specialty with respect to art-related matters. Mr. Stern has provided general counseling to more than 100 galleries and dealers, 70 artists and estates, as well as many collectors, auction houses and insurance companies. His representation addresses a wide variety of commercial or transactional matters, such as the formation of art-related businesses and ventures, transactions relating to the sale of artwork, as well as consignment, loan and representation agreements.

Mr. Stern is highly experienced in art-related litigation. Since 1980, he has handled numerous litigation matters for a major auction house and has represented parties in countless disputes relating to art-related subjects, such as the authenticity and ownership of artworks.

Mr. Stern has been active with a number of not-for-profit institutions. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts since 1995 and has been Chairman of its Board since 1999.

Mr. Stern is currently a member of The Association of the Bar of the City of New York (member, Committee on Art Law, 1985-1988, 1998-present); New York State Bar Association (member, Fine Arts Committee 1989-present). He is also a member of the Federal Bar Council.

Mr. Stern speaks fluent French and understands Spanish.
