Professor Fagette works within the Department of Biomedical Engineering as an interdisciplinary agent to reach out to multiple disciplines and groups to expand the understanding and importance of biomedical engineering with others such as the Department of Math and Science Education.
Professor Fagette teaches courses in 19th century history of science and the atomic age for the College of Science and Letters. He also developed a new course: a History of Artificial Organs and co-teaches the Introduction to the Profession for Biomedical Engineering Course, BME 100. Additionally, he is the co-advisor for the Biomedical Engineering Society Student Chapter at IIT. I am continuing to develop a national program based at IIT for development and eventual inclusion of historic case studies into core undergraduate biomedical engineering courses. An NSF grant has been submitted for this purpose. Other commitments include my role as historian for the Biomedical Engineering Society with service on the Ethics Committee, Education Committee, Image Task Force, and as associate editor for the BMES Bulletin and the Annals of Biomedical Engineering.
Dr. Fagette is continuing his research into the technological and scientific development of kidney dialysis, and is currently focusing on the 1943-1955 period.
