Paul Wessel is the head of Milbank's Compensation and Benefits Group of the Tax Department, based in the New York office. His practice includes all aspects of employee compensation and benefits law, with a particular focus on corporate transactions and executive compensation matters.
Mr. Wessel has represented numerous public and privately held companies, boards of directors and compensation committees, individual corporate executives and management groups. He provides advice on the compensation and benefits aspects of mergers and acquisitions, leveraged buyouts, public offerings and other corporate transactions. He regularly advises clients in connection with the design and implementation of equity compensation and incentive plans, qualified and nonqualified pension plans, employment, severance and change in control agreements, and other executive compensation arrangements. Mr. Wessel also represents clients in connection with ERISA fiduciary matters and employee benefits litigation.
Mr. Wessel currently serves as the Chairman of the Executive Compensation Subcommittee for the ABA Business Law Section, and is a Member of the New York State Bar Association Tax Section. He is a frequent speaker on executive compensation matters and has been published and quoted in the media on current issues in this area.
Mr. Wessel is admitted to practice in New York State and in the U.S. District Courts for the First and Second Departments of New York. He is listed in The Best Lawyers in America and The Best Lawyers in New York for Employee Benefits Law. Prior to joining Milbank, Mr. Wessel was the head of the Compensation and Benefits practice group at Dewey Ballantine LLP.
Mr. Wessel graduated from Cornell University in 1983, with a B.S. degree from the School of Industrial & Labor Relations. Mr. Wessel is a native of Buffalo, N.Y. and received his J.D. (cum laude) in 1987 from the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Law, where he was Editor-in-Chief of the Buffalo Law Review. He currently serves as a member of the Dean's Advisory Council for the law school and as a member of the Alumni Board of Editors for the law review. |
