Paul Westlake Biography :

Paul Westlake is Managing Principal and a Lead Designer in the firm of Westlake Reed Leskosky, founded in Cleveland in 1905 with offices in Phoenix, Arizona; Cleveland, Ohio and Washington, DC. Since 2000, his firm has been recognized with more than 500 publications and national, state, and local level design awards, including an AIA state level Gold Medal firm award, several honors from the National Trust for Historic Preservation, a Federal Design Achievement Award, and a Design Award from the U.S. General Services Administration.

Paul Westlake has participated in the design and management of numerous institutional, cultural and governmental structures. The range of his experience includes master planning, feasibility studies, programming, design and administration. He is one of the youngest architects to be elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects and is a recipient of the AIA Ohio Individual Gold Medal and the Cleveland Arts Prize for Architecture. He has received over 100 national, state and local design awards, including several honors from The National Trust for Historic Preservation and has been involved in the adaptive re-use and restoration of more than 200 National Register Landmarks.

In addition, Mr. Westlake has lectured on the topic of restoration to audiences including national conferences of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the United States Institute for Theatre Technology, the International Association of Assembly Managers, the Phoenix Art Museum, the League of Historic American Theatres and other preservation symposia. He also participated in a roundtable discussion with noted historic preservation architects at the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum in New York City, on the subject, “The Future of Preservation,” published in Architecture.

He has worked on four of the country’s five largest performing arts centers, designed facilities for the New York Philharmonic and Cleveland Orchestra, and designed a cultural complex on the site of the 1969 Woodstock Music and Arts Festival. He has been selected as lead designer for several commissions through the Design Excellence program for the General Services Administration, and serves as a national peer for the GSA Center for Design Excellence and the Arts in the Office of the Chief Architect.

Mr. Westlake received a Masters of Architecture with Faculty Commendation from Harvard University, where he co-founded the Harvard Architecture Review (recognized internationally as a leading journal of architecture theory), and was a Graham Foundation and an AIA Foundation Scholar. He also received a Bachelor of Arts, Cum Laude with Distinction in Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania, College of Arts and Sciences, and a Bachelor of Science in Economics Magna Cum Laude from the Wharton School, with a major in Finance. While maintaining an active professional practice, he lectures widely and has served on the Graduate Faculty and the Advisory Council of the School of Architecture and Environmental Design at Kent State University, is the Regional Chair of the Alumni/ae Council of the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, and is a member of the Council for Design Excellence of Arizona State University’s College of Architecture and Environment Design. Mr. Westlake is Co-Chair of the Cleveland Arts Prize, a former board member of the League of Historic American Theatres, the past commissioner of Architecture for the United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT) and a former board member of the Orpheum Theatre Foundation in Phoenix and the Museum of Contemporary Art.

A registered architect in 48 states, and the District of Columbia, his experience includes projects throughout the United States and Europe. Mr. Westlake’s prior associations with architectural firms include Louis Sauer in Philadelphia, Cambridge Seven Associates of Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Josep Lluis Sert of Barcelona, Spain and Cambridge, Massachusetts.
