Dr. Gurel is Chairman of the Aesis Research Group, LLC, an investment advisory and research firm that serves the healthcare and life science sectors. Dr. Gurel was most recently Chief Executive Officer at Duravest, Inc. a publicly-traded holding company in the medical technology sector. Prior to Duravest, Dr. Gurel was Vice President and Medical Director at Sg2, LLC a leading healthcare intelligence think-tank and consultancy serving hospitals and health systems. Dr. Gurel’s business background also includes management consulting at Booz, Allen & Hamilton where he was engaged in a number of strategy projects for leading healthcare and life sciences clients. He has also served as an independent consultant to several medical device firms in which he was specifically involved with both European and FDA clinical trial development and oversight. Dr. Gurel is a frequent conference speaker worldwide, addressing the issue of emerging technologies and their impact on the future of healthcare. His commentaries have been published in prominent publications, including the Wall Street Journal, and he is a regular columnist for Midwestbusiness.com, where he provides insight into the next generation of medical technology developments. Dr. Gurel holds a B.A. cum laude in Biochemical Sciences from Harvard University and an M.Phil. degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics from Columbia University. His work in the basic biomedical sciences has been published in the peer-reviewed scientific literature including the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) Journal and the Journal of Molecular Biology. On the clinical side, he received his M.D. with honors (Alpha Omega Alpha) from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Gurel completed surgical internship at the Massachusetts General Hospital with a joint appointment as Clinical Fellow in Surgery at the Harvard Medical School. Dr. Gurel served as an international medical relief worker during the NATO military campaign in Kosovo and in Turkey after the massive 1999 earthquake. His professional and civic responsibilities include being President-Elect of the Chicago Health Executives Forum (CHEF) and a member of the Board of Directors for Alumni for Public Schools, an organization that coordinates university alumni support for Chicago Public Schools. |
