Obiamaka P. Okwumabua is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP based in the Firm’s New York office. She is a member of the Trial Department.
Obiamaka defends individuals and corporations in complex civil litigation and white collar criminal cases in state and federal courts. She represents clients under investigation by the United States Congress, the Department of Justice, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Equal Opportunity Employment Commission, Federal Election Commission and other federal and state authorities. In addition, she conducts internal investigations on behalf of corporations and advises corporate and individual clients on a variety of regulatory matters. Obiamaka has tried cases in federal and state courts, including the successful defense of a client accused of federal fraud, racketeering, extortion, and bribery violations in a three month, multiple defendant jury trial in federal court.
Obiamaka also has experience in international litigation matters including assisting clients with procuring documents and witness testimony from foreign persons or entities located outside the United States and representing a corporate client in a lawsuit against a foreign company seeking immunity under Foreign Sovereign Immunity Act. She has also represented a corporate client in a civil action to enforce a domestic judgment against a foreign entity and advises corporate clients on a host of compliance and due diligence issues arising under the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC) regulations, and other trade compliance regulations.
Obiamaka’s pro bono work includes representation of low income or indigent persons in housing, domestic violence, child custody and government benefit cases. As an associate, she participated in an externship program with the Legal Aid Society of the District of Columbia, where she served as lead counsel on over 35 cases.
Before joining McDermott, Obiamaka was in private practice in Washington, D.C. and New York. She has also served as a law clerk to the Honorable Constance Baker Motley of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.
Obiamaka is admitted to practice in New York (1st Department), as well as before the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, the Eastern District of New York and the Southern District of New York.
