Ning Yen fled his war-torn country in Cambodia and immigrated to the U.S. in 1979 with nothing but hopes of achieving the 'American dream.' Once he arrived in the U.S., Ning was working several different jobs to support his family while also attending night school to learn the English language. Since he lacked technical job skills and spoke very little English, one of Ning's first jobs was baking donuts. Since donuts require little skill and language abilities, many Cambodian refugees have become successful in the donut industry through hard work. By 1981, Ning and his wife purchased their first donut shop in Irvine called Mag's Donuts and Bakery. By 1989, Ning invested in a small business called B&H Distributor who supplied a limited line of donut ingredients to local Cambodian donuts shops in Orange County. By the early-1990s, with Ning's leadership and insights, B&H expanded its product lines and became a full-service distributor catering to the ethnic Cambodian donut shops and bakeries all over Southern California. In 1994, Ning bought out his partner and incorporated the B&H trademark under Yen Enterprise, Inc. By the mid-1990s, the B&H trademark has evolved into an icon of Cambodian donuts and Ning was revered as the King of Cambodian Donuts. However, with the current economic downturn and the changing market trends in the donut industry coupled with the healthy low-carb craze, donut sales have been on the decline. Therefore, by October 2003, low growth potential and declining profit margins had forced Ning to divest his ownership in B&H. Currently, Ning is moving in a new direction and has been focusing his attention on working with Vietnamese manufacturers to develop a market for Vietnamese brand products in the U.S. |
