Nick Steffey has over thirty years of experience in the insurance and financial services industry. His experience in leadership, strategic planning, international business, mergers and acquisitions, underwriting management, and operational improvement are the core skills he uses in his role with BostonCap to assist companies achieve their next horizon of profitable growth.
Prior to co-founding BostonCap in 2002, Nick was Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Reinsurance Australia Corporation Limited, a publicly traded reinsurance company (2000-2001). Previously, he had been Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of GIO Australia Holdings (1998-1999), a top 25 publicly traded financial services company with over A$10 billion in assets.
From 1993-1998, Nick founded Liberty International Holdings, Inc., the international insurance subsidiary of Liberty Mutual Group. Under his leadership, Liberty International grew through a series of strategic acquisitions and new start-up operations to become a profitable $3.0 billion business with extensive operations in Europe, Latin America and Asia. Today, after just 10 years, Liberty International is the second largest US based international insurance company.
Prior to joining Liberty Mutual he had been Senior Vice President-Operations for CIGNA Worldwide, directly responsible for 8000 employees in 228 offices in 121 foreign countries. He also served as Chairman of the Board of CIGNA Canada, Chairman of the Management Committee of CIGNA Europe, NV, and a senior officer in most CIGNA'S foreign subsidiaries as well as many of its domestic subsidiaries. He had originally joined CIGNA's predecessor company, Connecticut General Group, as Vice President-Underwriting, and held various underwriting, operational and strategic planning positions. He was a key participant in the merger of Connecticut General and INA to form CIGNA, with responsibility for the integration of the offices the companies in the Northeast.
Nick began his career with the Chubb Corporation in 1967 as an underwriter in the surety department, ultimately assuming responsibility for Chubb's eastern US and international surety business.
Always active in industry affairs, Nick has served as Vice Chairman of the International Insurance Council, a Governor of the John Street Club and The Municipal Bond Insurance Association (MBIA) and on the Boards of the International Insurance Foundation, the Business Council for International Understanding, the US-Japan Business Council, and the US-China Business Council. Also, Nick has served on the International Policy Advisory Committee of the United States Chamber of Commerce. Nick has been an officer of the American Insurance Association and a speaker at numerous conferences of the National Association of Casualty and Surety Producers.
Nick is a graduate of the Lubin School of Business at Pace University (BBA -econ.) and the Hartford Graduate Center of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (MS-Fin.). He attended the AMP program at the College of Insurance and the Strategic Planning Institute led by Bill Rothschild of General Electric at Columbia University. |
