Mike began his career serving the nonprofit sector in 1985. Before founding Changing Our World, he served as Executive Vice President of External Affairs for the Franciscan Health Partnership, Inc., a Catholic healthcare system with assets over $1.1 billion, and the Franciscan Sisters of the Poor Foundation, Inc. a multimillion-dollar international healthcare foundation that serves the poor. He is an expert on fundraising, the business of communication, corporate strategy and organization. While with Franciscan, Mike built a team of committed and talented employees who took a $4 million per year system-wide Foundation and turned it into a $25.5 million per year powerhouse. Mike and his small development staff built a national endowment from zero in 1994 to $24.8 million in 1998. They successfully completed a $65 million capital and endowment campaign, making the Franciscan Sisters of the Poor Foundation one of the first healthcare system foundations to raise that sum through a unified campaign. Mike has been called upon to share his organizational strategy and motivational skills with varied organizations in the United States and abroad. His many speaking engagements have included the national conference of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, the Salzburg Seminar, Blackbaud’s International Conference on Philanthropy, and Changing Our World’s own Summit onPhilanthropy. A few years ago, the United States Agency for International Development asked Mike to bring his high-energy fundraising management style to post-Communist countries and today, there are successful foundations operating in Warsaw, Poland and Zadar, Croatia. Mike’s affiliations include serving as Trustee of the College of Mount St. Vincent, The Catholic University of America, and the National Catholic Community Foundation. He is chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Cabrini Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation and serves on the board of the Rudolph W. Giuliani Center for Urban Leadership, Inc. He is also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and is past chairman of the E-Philanthropy Foundation. Mike is a graduate of West Point and has Masters Degrees in Human Relations from Webster University and Aviation Management from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. Mike and his wife, Maggie, have three children: Shannon, Siobhan and Michael. |
