Dr. Pao is also the Chairman of Enhancement Partners, LP (www.enhancementlp. com). He also serves as a Board Member of Engineering Leadership Board, University of Houston, USA. He is a U.S. citizen, living in Houston; and a native of Dongtai, China. Dr. Pao’s Experience in Windpower: Dr. Pao is a pioneer in developing large wind turbines. He founded FloWind Corporation, and served as its CEO from 1981 to 1986. He led the efforts at FloWind that developed the 100 kW and 300 kW vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs), jointly with Sandia National Lab. The 300 kW VAWT was the largest and most cost-effective wind turbine at that time. For its contributions, FloWind received the top national award for energy innovation for 1984 from the U. S. Dept of Energy, jointly with the Sandia National Lab. Dr. Pao is also a pioneer in developing large-scale windfarms. He also led the efforts at FloWind that designed, manufactured, installed, and operated 500 of these VAWTs, on 7,000 acres of high-wind properties in two windfarms in California, one in the Altamont Pass near San Francisco and one in the Tehachapi Pass near Los Angeles, for a total power output of 170 MW (including those from Danish wind turbines). By the end of 1985, FloWind became the second largest windpower company in the U.S. These low-cost wind turbines operated reliably in California for over 20 years. Dr. Pao led the efforts that developed six new technologies for better tools and clean energy, and have successfully commercialized three new technologies: Waterjet Technology. Dr. Pao served as their CEOs and led the efforts at Flow Industries, Inc. and Flow International Corporation (NASDAQ: FLOW) that developed and commercialized the ultrahigh-pressure waterjet and abrasivejet technology for industrial cutting, drilling, and milling, and created the waterjet machining industry. Trenchless Technology Dr. Pao served as its CEO and led the efforts at FlowMole Corporation (NASDAQ: MOLE) that developed and commercialized the horizontal directional jet-drilling technology for the trenchless installation of underground cables and pipes, and ushered in the modern trenchless industry. Dr. Pao has formed six technology-based companies in the U. S. (see Exhibit-1), served as their CEOs and led the efforts to develop their technologies, built up their management teams, and listed three of the companies on NASDAQ National Market: Flow International Corporation (Symbol: FLOW); ADMAC, Inc. (ADMC) - acquired; and FlowMole Corporation (MOLE) acquired. FLOW was the 3rd best performing IPO in 1983, according to Barron’s. In 1998, Dr. Pao was cited by Industries et Techniques, a leading French industrial technology journal, as one of 100 important innovators for the past 40 years, from 1958 to 1998. In 2000, for his contributions, Dr. Pao was elected a Member of the National Academy of Engineering USA. Dr. Pao also served as adjunct professors at: Dept of Atmospheric Science, Univ. of Washington, Seattle, USA; Dept of Civil Engineering, Univ. of Utah, Salt Lake City, USA; Dept of Mechanical Engineering, Univ. of Houston, Houston, USA; and Dept of Mechanical Engineering, Nanyang Technological Univ., Singapore.
