Michael W. Sperry joined The South Financial Group in November 1998. He is responsible for the quality of credit risk-taking activities throughout the corporation and manages commercial and consumer loan administration, credit administration, special assets, and loan operations. Prior to joining the company, Mr. Sperry was Senior Executive Vice President and Manager of the Commercial Lending and Corporate Banking Group (1995-1997) at BB&T. Prior to itsmerger with BB&T, he was Executive Vice President and Chief Credit Officer at Southern National Corporation (1990-1995), Senior Vice President at NationsBank (1986-1989), and Senior Vice President at Bankers Trust of South Carolina (1976-1985). Mr. Sperry earned his undergraduate and MBA degrees from Georgia State University and is a graduate of the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University. He currently serves on the boards of the South Carolina Business Development Corporation and the Greenville Symphony Orchestra. He formerly served as a Trustee of The North Carolina Baptist Hospitals, Inc. and as Chairman of the North Carolina Shakespeare Festival, Inc. Mr. Sperry has also held positions with the Risk Management Association including Chairman of the Central South Carolina Chapter, Director of the Carolinas-Virginias Chapter, and Chairman of the National Accounting Policy Committee. |
