Michael Luttig Biography :

J. Michael (Mike) Luttig is senior vice president and general counsel of The Boeing Company. In this role, Luttig is responsible for leading the Boeing Law Department across the company. He was elected to this position in May 2006. He is also a member of the company's Executive Council.

Luttig joined Boeing after having served on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit for 15 years. At the time of his 1991 appointment by President George H. W. Bush, Luttig was the youngest federal appeals court judge in the country.

Prior to his appointment to the federal bench, Luttig served as assistant attorney general of the United States and counselor to the attorney general, at the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. While serving at the Department of Justice, Luttig assisted Justices Souter and Thomas in preparing for their hearings before the United States Senate on their nominations to the Supreme Court of the United States.

From 1985 to 1989, before beginning his service at the Department of Justice, Luttig was associated with the New York law firm of Davis Polk & Wardwell, in the firm's Washington, D.C. offices. Before joining Davis Polk, Luttig served as special assistant to the Chief Justice of the United States from 1984 to 1985.

From 1983 to 1984, Luttig served as law clerk to the Honorable Warren E. Burger, Chief Justice of the United States, and from 1982 to 1983, he served as law clerk to then-Judge Antonin Scalia of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

Luttig worked at The White House, in the Office of Counsel to the President, first as special assistant to The White House Counsel and then as assistant counsel, from 1981 to 1982. While in The White House, Luttig assisted in the preparation of Justice Sandra Day O'Connor for hearings before the Senate on her nomination to the Supreme Court of the United States.

From 1976 to 1978, Luttig worked at the Supreme Court of the United States in the Office of the Administrative Assistant to the Chief Justice.

Luttig earned his bachelor of arts degree from Washington and Lee University in 1976 and a juris doctorate from the University of Virginia in 1981. Luttig and his wife, Elizabeth, have been married since 1981. The Luttigs have two children. The family resides in the Chicago area.
