Description of Practice:
Michael is a partner in our Los Angeles office whose legal practice has spanned all areas of real estate, including finance, development, and land use. He has extensive experience in representing developers, sellers and buyers, investors and promoters, lenders, and real estate joint ventures.
Michael's real estate development practice includes a substantial public/private emphasis, including redevelopment, relocation, and mixed-use and transit-oriented projects, and public finance, including Section 108 loans, Community Development Block Grants, Economic Development Initiative grants, Brownfield Economic Development Initiative grants, Urban Development Association Grants, other types of Housing and Urban Development grants, Mello Roos bond financing, and tax increment financing. His practice also deals with prevailing wage issues arising in connection with such projects.
Michael's recent representative matters include:
the development and financing of a $100 million Los Angeles County office building;
the acquisition, entitlement, and construction of a high rise apartment and grocery store project;
the organization of a $600 million lending program designed to increase Los Angeles County preschool capacity;
the development of an affordable housing/retail project;
the development of an affordable housing/self-storage project;
the acquisition of a hotel for redevelopment as a mixed-use condominium project;
the issuance of Mello Roos bonds for $30 million in connection with the redevelopment of a regional mall;
the acquisition, entitlement, development, financing, construction, and sale of a major transit-oriented retail/residential development;
the acquisition, entitlement, development, financing, and construction of a grocery store/high-rise apartment complex;
advice on a prevailing wage dispute arising out of a $125 million shopping center renovation.
Michael frequently speaks on real estate development and land use issues. Since its inception, he has been a speaker at the Urban Land Institute/UCLA Extension Smart Growth Conference and served on its Organizing Committee. Recently, he was a speaker at the UCLA Anderson School of Business Conference on Smart Growth and Mixed-Use Development, and for several years he has been a lecturer at the University of Southern California's Master of Real Estate Development Program.
Michael is a Board Member and the Real Estate Committee Chair of the Genesis LA Economic Growth Corporation. He is also a member of the Los Angeles County Bar Association Real Estate and Land Use Sections, and of the International Council of Shopping Centers.
Educational History:
Michael received his B.S. with honors in business administration from Georgetown University. He received his J.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Law. |
