Michael J. Dowd graduated from Fordham University, magna cum laude, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Latin in 1981. While at Fordham, he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He earned his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Michigan School of Law in 1984 and entered private practice in New York that same year. He was admitted to practice in New York in 1985 and in California in 1988.
Mr. Dowd served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Southern District of California from 1987-1991 and again from 1994-1998. As an Assistant United States Attorney, Mr. Dowd obtained extensive trial experience, including the prosecution of bank fraud, bribery, money laundering and narcotics cases. He is a recipient of the Director's Award for Superior Performance as an Assistant United States Attorney. Mr. Dowd has been responsible for prosecuting complex securities cases and obtaining recoveries for investors, including cases involving AOL Time Warner, WorldCom, Qwest, Vesta, U.S. West, Safeskin and Bergen Brunswig. Mr. Dowd was the lead lawyer for the Coughlin Stoia trial team in In re AT&T Corp. Sec. Lit., which was tried in the District of New Jersey, and settled after two weeks of trial for $100 million. Mr. Dowd also participated in the Firm's tobacco cases.
