Michael Heintzman is a Resident Partner in our Pittsburgh Office. He is a trial lawyer with numerous jury verdicts and numerous settlements during the course of trial. He concentrates his practice in the defense of product liability, medical malpractice, and toxic tort cases. Mr. Heintzman represents physicians and other medical professionals in the defense of professional liability cases. Many of these cases have involved claims that a physician improperly prescribed or used drugs, from over-the-counter medications such as aspirin to the most potent vasopressors used in life-threatening situations. Some of these cases have involved product liability claims against co-defendant drug manufacturers for drugs such as antibiotics or against manufacturers of various surgical devices. Mr. Heintzman works closely with clients and their insurance carriers to coordinate and manage all aspects of the claims made against them. He is experienced in retaining and developing medical experts in a wide variety of specialties in order to plan and prepare the proper defense for his clients, including defense at trial. Mr. Heintzman has also been retained by excess insurance carriers in London to review and audit medical malpractice claims against hospitals. Mr. Heintzman has defended numerous companies confronted with toxic tort claims. He was chosen by a Fortune 100 Company to serve as National Coordinating Counsel for one of its former wholly-owned subsidiaries for its silica and asbestos claims. As National Coordinating Counsel, he supervised approximately 50 firms in 45 states by coordinating discovery, developing strategies and budgets, and serving as lead trial counsel More recently, Mr. Heintzman was selected to serve as National Coordinating Counsel for a company that supplies ash handling technology to power plants In that capacity, he is currently supervising eight firms in 11 states, coordinating the client’s defense in about numerous cases, and serving as lead trial counsel Mr. Heintzman has tried asbestos cases to verdict in Texas, Pennsylvania, and New York, and settled numerous cases during trial in the same jurisdictions as well as in Michigan, Illinois, West Virginia, California, Oregon, and Georgia. He has also tried silica cases to verdict in Pennsylvania. Mr. Heintzman graduated from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 1975. He is licensed to practice before the United States Supreme Court and the state and federal courts of Pennsylvania and Colorado. Mr. Heintzman has made presentations to insurance companies, professional groups, and the Allegheny County Bar Association about various medical malpractice issues. He has also been asked to speak about the legal and medical evaluation of toxic tort claims as part of insurance company in-house training programs and has been an invited speaker at trade group and Continuing Legal Education seminars. |
