Merrilee Gordon was appointed Vice President, Upstream with Shell Global Solutions Inc. in 2006. Among her priorities is safety and applying technology to accelerate upstream growth. She believes that the energy industry must play a key role in developing sustainable and affordable energy supplies to meet world demand. Merrilee gained an honours BS in geological engineering at Michigan Technological University and was an AE Seaman Mineralogical Award Winner. Before joining Shell she held a number of engineering and management positions in drilling, IT and HSE for Amoco Corporation and BP America. She worked as the first female drill-site supervisor and later as drilling superintendent at Amoco where she used her skills to ensure excellence in well delivery. At BP, she managed a large drilling research budget, and initiated a project that later won an award from the British Royal Academy of Science. As Manager, Drilling Performance, she implemented new processes and measurements designed to reduce BP’s drilling costs worldwide. In 2001, Merrilee joined Shell Exploration and Production, where she worked as Development and Operations Manager, leading the effort to add value through development of coal-bed methane resources in Michigan until the asset was sold in 2003. She then moved to become Manager, Capabilities and Technology, Shell International Exploration and Production, Inc. There she was in charge of deploying technology to Shell’s worldwide drilling and completion operations. She also led business strategy and planning, budgeting and performance improvement. Achievements included creation of a global technology strategy for well delivery that supported Shell’s upstream growth objectives. She led the worldwide deployment of Shell’s real-time operating centres. This means of bridging time and distance divides between expertise holders and Shell’s globally dispersed operations is yielding improved well delivery performance. |
