Experience: Melissa has over 15 years of accounting experience working with businesses and not-for-profit clients. Her areas of expertise include audit services for community hospitals, long-term care facilities, foundations, finance companies, and not-for-profit organizations. As the leader of the audit team, she is responsible for the efficient conduct of all facets of the audit process, including supervision of audit staff; completion of fieldwork; preparation of financial statements, tax returns, and management letters; and presentations to clients and their boards and executive committees. A significant portion of Melissa’s practice focuses on not-for-profit organizations, and she devotes a considerable amount of time to providing auditing services to various 501(c)(3) entities, including health care organizations. She is skilled and well-versed in the specific reporting requirements of these organizations. Melissa is responsible for compliance testing and preparation of financial statements in accordance with applicable guidelines for the various clients that she audits as required by the various relevant Office of Management and Budget circulars. She is also particularly knowledgeable in helping her clients meet the unique challenges faced by these organizations. Additionally, Melissa is responsible for all employee benefit plan audits conducted in the Roanoke Office. Melissa began her auditing career with the Auditor of Public Accounts (APA) for the Commonwealth of Virginia. During her tenure with the APA, she supervised up to ten audit staff members, working on various state agency audits.. Her governmental experience included supervising Virginia’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) audit, in which financial reports from state agencies are compiled and presented to the Governor of Virginia. Her experience also included performing audits in accordance with state laws and regulations, as well as compliance with Yellow Book standards. Prior to joining Goodman & Company, Melissa worked in the banking industry as an internal auditor. Rising to a Supervisory position, she was responsible for leading teams in auditing various bank functional areas. In addition to her active participation on Goodman & Company’s Municipal and Governmental Entities, Not-for-Profit Organizations, and Hospitals and Long-Term Care Providers specialization teams, Melissa played a key role in assisting firm members in the Roanoke office in moving to an electronic engagement process, thus enhancing the quality and efficiency of our client engagements. Other Activities: Melissa lends her time, talents, and financial resources to a variety of charity golf tournaments in the Roanoke area and as an organizer of the Jenny Craft Scholarship Fund, which annually awards scholarships to female high school athletes.
