Matthew Farley is a partner in the Commercial Litigation Practice Group. He received his bachelor's degree from Rutgers University, his M.B.A. from Rutgers School of Business and his J.D. from Rutgers University School of Law. He joined the firm in 1972. Since that time his practice has concentrated on securities litigation in the defense of securities brokerage firms, accounting firms and a wide array of other financial services industry firms and professionals.
In a practice spanning over three decades, Matt has represented the nation's largest and best known securities brokerage and investment banking firm in trials and hearing around the country. He has recently defended member firms in the so called "research analysts" cases and also "market timing" trading of mutual funds. He is also actively engaged on counseling and representation of firms and their employees who are the subject of regulatory agency attention.
Matt holds memberships in bar associations including the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, New York State, and the New Jersey State and American Bar Associations, where he is a member in the Section on Litigation, Broker-Dealer Subcommittee. He is a past co-chairman of the Annual Survey of Federal Securities Law. His published works include A Current Look at the Law of Insider Trading which appeared in Volume 39, No. 4 of The Business Lawyer; and the articles, Frivolous Motions to Vacate: A Proposal on How to Deal with Them, and Arbitrating with the Non-Signatory, which appeared in PLI: Securities Arbitration. For over twenty years, he has been a regular speaker on securities arbitration and mediation issues at the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (Compliance and Legal division) annual meetings. He most recently participated in a workshop on mediation of securities disputes at the SIFMACL March 2007 annual meeting.
Matt is also admitted to the bars of the District of Columbia, as well as in the United States District Courts of New Jersey, the Southern, Eastern, Northern and Western Districts of New York, District of Columbia and Northern District of Indiana. He also is admitted to the United States Supreme Court and the United States Courts of Appeals for the Second, Third, Fifth, Seventh and Ninth Circuits and the District of Columbia, as well as the United States Tax Court. |
