W. Marston Becker is currently serving as General Partner and Chairman of West Virginia Media Holdings, a statewide West Virginia media company that he co-founded in his home state in 2001. WVMH presently owns four television stations and one newspaper in West Virginia that reach 90% of its citizens.
Mr. Becker also serves as Chairman and CEO of the runoff LaSalle Re, a Bermuda domiciled reinsurance company. Mr. Becker previously served as Chairman and CEO of Trenwick Group a Bermuda domiciled insurance company formerly writing specialty insurance in the U.S., U.K. and Bermuda. Mr. Becker led a workout effort restructuring, running-off and selling assets. He also negotiated a pre-packaged Chapter 11 filing from which Trenwick has emerged as a run-off entity in 2005.
Beginning in 1996, Mr. Becker was Chairman of the board and CEO of Orion Capital Corporation, a NYSE-listed company with assets exceeding $4 billion based in Farmington, Connecticut. Orion Capital, a premier specialty property and casualty insurance business, was sold in an industry leading transaction to royal and SunAlliance in November 1999. Mr. Becker served as Vice Chairman and a Director of Royal & SunAlliance, USA until December 2000. While at Orion, Mr. Becker also served as President and CEO of DPIC Companies, an Orion Capital subsidiary from 1994-96.
Prior to Orion Capital, Mr. Becker was President and CEO of McDonough Caperton Insurance Group, a regional insurance brokerage and third party claims administrator (TPA), from 1986-1994. Mr. Becker joined McDonough Caperton in 1978 after starting his career with the public accounting firm of Ernst & Young.
Mr. Becker is a Director of Max Re Capital, Ltd. (NASDAQ-MXRE), a Bermuda domiciled insurance/reinsurance entity, McJunkin Corporation of Charleston, West Virginia, a privately-held national distributor to the oil, gas, and chemical industry, Mountain Companies, a West Virginia headquartered roofing specialist for the southeastern U.S., West Virginia/United Hospital System, Blanchette Rockefeller Neurological Institute, Clay Center for the Arts, and the West Virginia Roundtable. He is an Advisory Board member of the Conning Funds, American Securities Funds, and International Catastrophe Insurance Managers, LLC (ICAT).
Mr. Becker earned his Juris Doctor and Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degrees from West Virginia University. He is a Certified Public Accountant.
