Markku Mäki, M.D., Ph.D. is the Chair and Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Tampere and Tampere University Hospital in Finland. He received his medical degree from the University of Turku in 1973, and his doctoral degree from the University of Tampere in 1982. His research interests lie in the field of gastroenterology. He is the leader of a multidisciplinary Celiac Disease Study Group that conducts clinical and epidemiological studies in adults and children, and also investigates genetic and pathogenic aspects of Celiac Sprue. He has published over 100 scientific papers on this disease, and has been recognized for these achievements by a Maud Kuistila Prize and a SGO Johansson Award. Dr. Maki was elected as a permanent member of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters in 2005. He has also been the President of the Finnish Celiac Society and is still the chairman of its Medical Advisory Board. Dr. Maki was Secretary-General of the European Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) from 1997-2000. |
