Marcus Bogue Biography :

Marcus C. Bogue III, Ph.D. is Chairman and a founder of Charter Oak Investment Systems, Inc and President and the founder of Cook, Croft & Co., Inc.Charter Oak Investment Systems, Inc. has two, somewhat linked, lines of business. It works with equity database providers, principally Standard and Poor’s Compustat, to reformulate their databases into new products more suited to the needs of quantitative investment managers. The Compustat As First Reported database is one of many database products developed by Charter Oak. The company also develops and markets to large, quantitative investment managers a software platform, called the Investment Workstation, which is used to create, maintain and implement equity investment models. In conjunction, Cook, Croft & Co., Inc. provides consulting advice to assist large money managers in the development and improvement of their quantitative equity investment models.Upon completion of his graduate degrees, Dr. Bogue became an Assistant Professor of Finance at Carnegie-Mellon University in the early 1970s. After leaving academia, he became involved in corporate strategic planning in the late nineteen-seventies. He joined Braxton Associates, a corporate strategic planning firm, where he was a Vice President. As his engagements became more involved with the financial aspects of strategic planning, he separated to co-found the Braxton Financial Group, where he was President. At both Braxton firms, he headed numerous consulting teams performing strategic and financial analysis for principally Fortune 50 companies. A significant amount of his work involved using large financial databases, predominately Standard & Poor’s Compustat, to search for strategically and financially attractive acquisitions for large companies. In the early 1980s, he became the President of The Planning Economics Group, a struggling economic consulting and marketing research firm. He quickly turned that firm around by adding a strong strategic planning component. As a result of his success, he was asked to run a joint venture between the Planning Decisions Group, the parent of The Planning Economics Group, and Dow Jones & Co., Inc. to develop software affiliated with Dow Jones’s News Retrieval. Then, in the mid 1980s, he founded and became President of Marnick Associates, Inc., where he lead the team responsible for designing, creating and implementing the Compustat PC-Plus product for Standard & Poors' Compustat. In the very late 1980s, he co-founded Charter Oak.Dr. Bogue holds a Bachelor of Science with Great Distinction from Stanford University, a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering, in the Computation Option, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a Doctor of Philosophy, in Finance, from Stanford University. His doctoral thesis advisor at Stanford was Professor William F. Sharpe, a co-winner of the 1990 Nobel Prize in Economics. Dr. Bogue is a member of the Tau Beta Pi, Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi honor societies. He has published papers in the Journal of Finance and is co-author, with Professor Elwood Buffa of U.C.L.A., of Corporate Strategic Analysis, published by Free Press.
