Marcel Garsaud Biography :

After finishing Loyola Law School in 1959 where he was a member of the Law Review and National Moot Court team, Marcel practiced law in New York with Standard Oil Company, now Exxon Mobil, in its tax department. In that role, he handled executive compensation matters on the international, national, and state level as well as issues dealing with the company's various employee benefit plans. In 1963, Marcel joined the Loyola Law School faculty, teaching courses in income and gift and estate tax. In 1967, he obtained a masters in law at Yale Law School. After receiving his degree from Yale, Marcel returned to Loyola where he became Dean of the Law School from 1970-1982. In 1978, he was appointed Judge Pro Tempore to the Louisiana Fourth Circuit Court of Appeal. In 1982, he joined Gordon, Arata as Of Counsel and soon became a partner, serving as a member of the Commercial Litigation Section where he successfully represented clients in state and local tax matters, commercial lease disputes, and fiduciary obligations issues. In 1993, he again returned to Loyola to serve as Interim Dean and remained on the full-time faculty teaching courses in Constitutional Law, First Amendment, Torts, and the Legal Profession. Marcel rejoined the firm of counsel in May of 2002. His practice focuses on commercial litigation and mediation and arbitration. Marcel serves in numerous community endeavors. He was a member and Chairman of the New Orleans City Civil Service Commission, President of the Louisiana Bar Foundation, and a trustee of the Ochsner Clinic Foundation. He is a former member of the ABA House of Delegates and a Fellow of the American Bar Association. He has served a number of times as a member of the Board of Governors of the Louisiana Bar Association and was honored by the Louisiana Bar Foundation as the first recipient of its Distinguished Professor Award.
