Marc E. Brown is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP and head of its patent procurement practice in the Firm's Los Angeles office. As a member of the Intellectual Property, Media & Technology Department, Marc focuses on computer hardware, software, the internet, electronics and biomedical devices. He is a member of the Computer Law Association; held an Advanced Class Amateur Radio Operator's License (WB6WRI); designed digital systems, analog circuitry, servo systems and R.F. equipment; and wrote database, web scraping and other software applications.
Marc managed one of the largest patent infringement lawsuits ever filed that was directed against about $6 billion in sales of client/server computing technology. He has been involved with high-technology intellectual property litigation for decades and regularly represents clients in the procurement, evaluation and enforcement of high-technology patents (including patents on computer hardware, software, the internet, electronics and biomedical devices), trademarks (including domain names), trade secrets and software copyrights. Marc also performs due diligence studies, renders freedom to operate opinions, and negotiates and drafts software development and licensing agreements, as well as other technology-based agreements.
Marc's writings on intellectual property law have been widely published [view complete list of publications]. He designed and wrote Brown on Patents, an interactive, on-line guide to patents. He authored the columns "On The Law" in Electronic Business, "Software and the Law" in Dr. Dobb's Sourcebook and "Electronics and the Law" in Electronics. He also wrote "Internet Business Method Patents," an internet-linked CD containing a compendium of reports and related information on important internet business method patents.

Marc served as Law Clerk and Technical Advisor to the United States Court of Claims (now called the United States Claims Court) in Washington, D.C., in connection with major patent infringement lawsuits brought against the United States government. He received his bachelor's of science degree in electrical engineering.
Marc is admitted to practice before numerous federal and state courts, both at the trial and appellate level and is admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
