Mahmoud Ayoub Biography :

Mahmoud Ayoub is Professor of Islamic Studies and Comparative Religion at Temple University in Philadelphia. He was born in 1938 in south Lebanon. A graduate of the American University of Beirut with an M.A. from the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Ayoub earned his Ph.D. in the history of religion at Harvard University. He has been professor of Islamic studies for the Department of Religion at Temple University and Research Fellow at the Middle East Center of the University of Pennsylvania since 1988. He was previously lecturer in religious studies at the University of Alberta; assistant professor of religious studies at San Diego State University; visiting professor of the Institute for Islamic Studies at McGill University; visiting professor at Belamont Greek Orthodox Seminary in Koura, Lebanon; research associate at the Center for Religious Studies at the University of Toronto; and adjunct professor of the D. B. Macdonald Center of Islamic Studies and Muslim-Christian Relations of Hartford Seminary, Hartford, CT. Dr. Ayoub is Editorial Consultant of The Muslim World Journal ; Chief Editor of Qur'an Commentary al-Mizan of Muhammed Husayn Tabataba'i, under the aegis of the Alawi Foundation; and a member of the editorial board of the journal Islam and Christian Muslim Relations. He has authored a number of books in English and Arabic in the area of Islam and Inter-religious dialogue. The most notable are Redemptive Suffering in Islam and The Qur’an and Its Interpreters (2 volumes to date). He has published over fifty scholarly articles both as chapters in edited works as well as in well-known academic refereed journals. Two of his recent works are Crisis of Muslim History: Religion and Politics in Early Islam, 2003, and (forthcoming, 2004) Islam in Faith and History (both published by Oneworld Publications). Currently he is working on the third volume of The Qur’an and Its Interpreters. Ayoub attended a Christian missionary school for the blind during his childhood. After that experience, he began to strive for peace through studying the similarities between Islam and Christianity and between Islam and Judaism.
