Lowell Carson Biography :

Mr. Carson has been with the firm since 2000 and was admitted to the Patent Bar in 2001. In 2005, Mr. Carson received a Juris Doctorate from Temple University's Beasley School of Law. His studies there focused on intellectual property and business law, particularly the emerging law of computers and cyberspace. Before entering the legal profession, Mr. Carson gained a wide variety of experience in electrical, optical, electro-optical, and semiconductor technologies, while working as a teacher, scientist and engineer in the corporate and university sectors. He also brings a broad understanding of mathematics and physical science from his education and training in physics. Mr. Carson has a broad understanding of scientific theory from teaching courses in general and modern physics at Bryn Mawr College and in the Philadelphia School District. In addition, he taught courses during Massachusetts Institute of Technology's "Summer Sessions High Speed Photography and Videography Laboratory" (1985 - 1987), and worked in MIT's Strobe Lab directly with Harold "Doc" Edgerton, the noted father of the modern stroboscope, underwater camera, and side scan sonar. Mr. Carson also worked in the Microwave and Sub-Millimeter Radiation Group in the MIT Plasma Fusion Center as a Staff Scientist. There he gained expertise with lasers, high-powered gyrotron oscillators and sensor systems. He also assisted in the development and construction of a one-of-a-kind far infrared and microwave sensor system employing specially manufactured Schottkey diodes and SAW filters. After leaving MIT, Mr. Carson worked as an R&D Test Engineer in Honeywell's Electro-optics Division (later Loral Infrared and Imaging Systems), analyzing the electrical, optical, and thermal properties of Hg:Cd:Te infrared detectors. While there, he was part of the team that won the 1990 Honeywell Corporate Innovation Award for design of a method to improve the radiation hardness of infrared detectors. Since joining RatnerPrestia, Mr. Carson has gained additional technical experience in telecommunications, optical systems, nanotechnology, and highly mathematical processes, such as signal processing, financial system modeling, and process control. He has also co-authored a chapter in BNA's Electronic and Software Patents, 2d Ed. on the uses and preparation of legal opinions regarding non-infringement, invalidity, and unenforceability of a competitor's patents.
