Lee Hammond Biography :

W. Lee Hammond of Salisbury, MD, was elected by the Board to serve as Vice President - Secretary/Treasurer for the 2006-2008 biennium and in that capacity chairs the Board Audit and Finance Committee. He also is chair of the National Nominating Committee and a member of the Governance Review Committee. During the 2004-2006 biennium, Mr. Hammond served as Vice President - Membership and co-chair of the 2006 National Leadership Forum. Prior to that, he was a member of the Board Audit and Finance Committee and the National Nominating Committee, and co-chaired the 2004 National Leadership Conference Planning Committee.

Mr. Hammond currently is on the Maryland Commission on Aging, the board of directors of the Maryland Rural Health Association and M.A.C. Inc., an Area Agency on Aging serving four counties. He also chairs the supervisory committee of the Board of Education Employees Federal Credit Union. Mr. Hammond previously was AARP Maryland State President and was on the Maryland Intergenerational Coalition and the U.S. Attorney's Health Care Fraud Task Force. He also served as president of the Maryland Retired Teachers Association.

Mr. Hammond began his 30-year career in education in Wicomico County, Maryland, as a classroom teacher. He then served as a school administrator for 25 years, developing administrative and managerial skills while working with diverse student and professional populations. His work enabled him to assume leadership roles in several professional associations. In recognition of his career accomplishments, he was presented a Governor's Citation for Work in Education and an Honorary Life Membership in the Maryland Congress of Parents and Teachers.

In addition to his AARP and Maryland Retired Teachers Association volunteer service, Mr. Hammond was a board member and is a past president of the Holly Foundation, a nonprofit organization working to improve the lives of developmentally challenged persons. He is an ordained elder and liturgist in the Wicomico Presbyterian Church. In recognition of his volunteer service, Mr. Hammond received the Governor's Salute to Excellence and was elected to the Maryland Senior Citizens Hall of Fame.
