Larry McCall is in his 19th season as a pitching coach in the Orioles system, and his second year in Norfolk. He spent the 2007 season with Norfolk, and the Tides are the 10th different team in the system for which McCall has served as pitching coach, with stops at each minor league level.
McCall spent the second half of the 2006 season as the bullpen coach for Baltimore. In 2005, McCall was named the winner of the Cal Ripken Sr. Player Development Award, presented to a minor league staff member who exemplifies the qualities of the late Oriole who is regarded as the architect of "The Oriole Way". He served as the pitching coach at Delmarva in 2003 and Gulf Coast in 2002 after spending the previous 4 years at Rochester. McCall was also the pitching coach at Double-A Bowie in 1997 after a season at Class A High Desert.
McCall began his coaching career in professional baseball in 1990 as a pitching coach with Bluefield, and followed that up with two seasons at Class-A Kane County. He moved on to Frederick for the 1993 season and spent three seasons there before going to High Desert in '96. He also spent the 1991 offseason in Australia, serving as the pitching coach for the Perth Heat.
McCall began his playing career in the Orioles organization in 1971 as an undrafted free agent out of a tryout camp. He pitched at Bluefield, Lodi (where he was 14-7), Asheville and Rochester through '75 before being released by the Orioles after the 1975 season. He later made his major league debut with the Yankees on Sept. 10, 1977 vs. Toronto. |
