Experience:
Kristy L. Balsanek is an associate in Mayer Brown’s Government and Global Trade group. Kristy’s practice focuses on international corporate compliance, transactions, policy, and litigation with an emphasis on China and Southeast Asia. She advises US and foreign companies on compliance with US export controls, economic sanctions, anti-boycott laws, the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), and the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS). In addition, Kristy provides counsel on the World Trade Organization (WTO), bilateral, regional, and multilateral trade agreements, market access issues, and legislative strategies for international trade policy and negotiations. She also represents and counsels manufacturers, exporters, importers, and purchasers in administrative proceedings concerning anti-dumping laws, countervailing laws, and customs laws before federal agencies and courts.
Active in the ABA Section of International Law, Kristy is Vice Chair of the Section's International Trade Committee. She has spoken and written articles on a variety of international trade topics. Kristy also is a member of the Asia Society and Women in International Trade (WIIT).
Prior to joining Mayer Brown, Kristy practiced international trade law in the Washington, DC office of a major international law firm. Previously, Kristy served two years as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Sichuan, China, where she taught English at a rural teacher’s college, studied Chinese, and traveled extensively throughout China and Thailand. Kristy also worked for several years as an International Trade Assistant at a large law firm in Washington, DC, where she researched and drafted papers on a variety of international trade policy and legislative issues. She speaks conversational Mandarin Chinese.
