Kenneth J. Jurek is a partner in the law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP based in the Firm's Chicago office. As an experienced trial lawyer, Ken focuses his practice on complex commercial matters, including intellectual property litigation. Ken joined McDermott in 1995 after spending more than twenty years with Mayer, Brown & Platt.
Ken has been lead trial counsel in over 200 litigation matters, having tried complex cases throughout the United States and in various federal administrative agencies. Ken has represented consumer products companies, insurance companies and book publishers in complex class action litigation. He has handled complex commercial matters ranging from the constitutionality of statutes and ordinances as they affect business to multi-district products liability matters to construction defects and fraud cases. He has extensive experience in diverse patent infringement matters in many disciplines, such as aerospace brakes and fasteners, air movement devices, automotive parts and components, bar code readers, biotechnology-derived products, business practices, consumer products, foods, immunodiagnostics, infant nutrition, marine propulsion, machine vision technology, micro-imagery products, microprocessor-assisted automation, pagers, packaging, pharmaceuticals, railroad equipment, insurance products, medical products, recreational products, robotics, telephone systems, cellular telephones, software and petroleum refining.
Ken has been recognized by EuroMoney Legal Media Group as a U.S. patent expert, a distinction that is granted to less than 250 lawyers worldwide. He has also been named an Illinois Super Lawyer by Law & Politics and a Leading Lawyer by Law Bulletin.
Ken is a member of the American Bar Association, Sections on Litigation, Patent, Copyright and Trademark Law, Antitrust, Franchises and Corporate Counsel Subcommittees. He is a member of the bar of the State of Illinois, and has been admitted to practice in several federal district and circuit courts including the Federal Trial Bar of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, the bars of the U.S. District Courts for the Northern District of Illinois, Central District of Illinois, Eastern District of Michigan, Northern District of California, Western District of Tennessee, District of Arizona and Western District of Wisconsin, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth, Sixth, Seventh, Eighth, Ninth and Federal circuits and the Supreme Court of the United States.
During law school, Ken was developments editor of the Law Review and Order of the Coif. He was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1973 and clerked for the Honorable Prentice H. Marshall, U.S. District Court, Northern District of Illinois (1973-1974). Ken joined Mayer, Brown & Platt in 1974, where he became a partner in 1980, practicing in that firm's Litigation Department for over 22 years and heading up the Intellectual Property Group. He is co-author of Federal Litigation Guide.
