Kathleen Cooney-Porter is a partner in Oblon, Spivak, McClelland, Maier & Neustadt’s Trademark and Copyright Practice Group.
Ms. Cooney-Porter counsels clients in trademark, copyright, unfair competition, trade dress, trade names, Internet-related and anti-counterfeiting matters in the United States and elsewhere. Ms. Cooney-Porter represents clients in a wide variety of fields such as publishing, real estate, banking, marketing, insurance, pharmaceutical, chemical, telecommunications, computer technology, energy, aviation, medical, scientific research, apparel, food and beverage industries, and animal husbandry. Ms. Cooney-Porter also represents the United States government as well as several non-profit associations and organizations.
Ms. Cooney-Porter was a former attorney at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and served in the Office of the Assistant Commissioner for Trademarks and in the former Office of the Director for Trademarks. She was a recipient of the U.S. Department of Commerce Bronze Medal Award for superior federal service.
Ms. Cooney-Porter was appointed to the Trademark Public Advisory Committee of the United States Patent and Trademark Office by the Secretary of the Department of Commerce, Carlos M. Gutierrez in 2004. As a member of the Trademark Public Advisory Committee, Ms. Cooney-Porter advised the Undersecretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office on matters relating to the policies, goals, performance, budget and user fees of the U.S. Trademark Office.
Ms. Cooney-Porter received her Juris Doctorate from Catholic University of America School of Law in 1989, earning a Certificate of Commendation from the International Law Program and a Certificate of Merit from the International Law Society. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Vanderbilt University in 1986 with concentrations in Russian and Political Science.
Ms. Cooney-Porter is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court; the District of Columbia; the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia; and the State Bar of Pennsylvania. She is a member of the American Bar Association, Bar Association of the District of Columbia -- Patent, Trademark and Copyright Section; the Women's Bar Association of the District of Columbia; the American Intellectual Property Law Association; Intellectual Property Owners Association and the International Trademark Association. Ms. Cooney-Porter served on the steering committee of the District of Columbia Bar, Intellectual Property Law Section and was co-chair of this committee from 2000-2002.
Ms. Cooney-Porter’s civic activities include various local and national charities/institutions such as The Washington Jesuit Academy, Pediatric Aids/HIV Care, Inc. of D.C., St. Jude’s Hospital, Dolley Madison Preschool, Salvation Army, National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, Organization for Autism Research, and many other respected organizations and institutions. |
