Karyn Mashima is Avaya's Senior Vice President Strategy & Technology. Avaya is a leading global provider of business communications applications systems and services.Mashima is responsible for formulating and driving overall business and technology strategies including business development and cross product and next-generation solutions architectures.
Prior to her position with Avaya she held a similar post with the Enterprise Networks unit of Lucent Technologies. Mashima joined AT&T in 1994 and was a key leader in the formation of Lucent's Data Networking Systems unit. As part of that team she led the quest to combine the performance and reliability of voice networks with the dynamic worlds of video and data. She has spent more than 20 years leading product teams on both sides of the data and voice divide sharpening a sense of how to integrate both segments for maximum customer and business benefit.
She began her career as product manager of Xerox Corp.'s Office Systems division. She worked at Xerox in Palo Alto to enable direct connection of Digital's VAX-11 computers to the Ethernet allowing the VAXes to become network citizens for file servers.
Mashima moved to Hewlett-Packard in 1984 where she championed the business case for HP OpenView then introduced it to the marketplace and established it as the open systems platform of choice for network management.
As vice president of Network Equipment Technologies Mashima engineered the1991-1992 turnaround from a U.S. supplier of private transmission backbone gear to a profitable worldwide supplier of internetworking equipment for public and private voice and data networks.
While serving as a vice president at Proteon Inc. in 1993 and 1994 she was responsible for both product management of the SNA internetworking business and for turning around the reputation of a company known for flagging revenues in a growth industry.
Most recently the NJBiz magazine named Mashima a Woman of Influence for 2005. In addition in March of 2004 the executive search firm Christian & Timbers named Mashima to their First Annual List of Tech Women to Watch. Mashima is recognized as an industry leader and has delivered many presentations at industry conferences. Most recently in September of 2005 she was a keynote speaker at the European Convergence Forum in Marbella Spain. She was also a keynote speaker in June of 2005 at Forrester Research's GigaWorld Conference in Prague as well as IDC's IP Telephony Conference in Copenhagen. She participated in The Great Debate on Security at VoiceCon 2003. In February of 2002 she was the keynote speaker at ExpoComm Mexico in Mexico City. She also delivered the keynote at Networld+Interop in September of 2001.
A native of Huntington N.Y. Mashima earned an M.B.A. from the University of New Mexico's Robert O. Anderson Graduate School of Management and a B.S. degree with distinction from the University of New Mexico. |
