Karen Petrulakis is a litigation partner in FLK's San Francisco office. Ms. Petrulakis' practice involves complex commercial litigation, including trusts & estates litigation and high-stakes employment litigation, and counseling regarding employment law and internet privacy issues. She joined the firm in 1993, and has served as chair of the firm's recruiting committee. She is currently chair of the firm's business development committee and co-chair of the women partners' group.
Since 2003, Ms. Petrulakis has been a member of the Stanford Law School Board of Visitors. She has also served as Co-Chair of the Stanford Law Society of San Francisco since 2005.
Representative Matters
Following a five-week jury trial, obtained judgment in favor of employer on wrongful termination claim in which the employee (a high-level executive) alleged whistleblowing with regard to accounting issues related to a possible IPO and sought over $65 million in damages. Case settled after appeal.
Representing 14 California cities and local agencies in pursuing civil RICO, fraud and fiduciary duty claims against Merrill Lynch arising out of the Orange County bankruptcy. After obtaining a favorable appellate court ruling, FLK recovered over $34 million for clients, a result that provided complete compensation for all losses.
Representing multi-billion dollar private company in contract litigation in which FLK obtained summary judgment in favor of the company and affirmance of the judgment on appeal.
Winning summary judgment in state court on behalf of executor and estate in the defense of litigation alleging that bank signature cards signed by the decedent hours before his death created joint tenancy accounts with a right of survivorship in favor of a neighbor who was neither a family member nor a beneficiary under the decedent's will.
Representing investment advisor in litigation in Texas in which the plaintiff alleged fraud, negligent misrepresentation, ratification, violation of the Texas Securities Act, breach of contract, negligence, and breach of fiduciary duty.
Winning summary judgment in federal court on behalf of a national grocery store chain in a wrongful termination and age discrimination case brought by a former store manager, and again in separate litigation brought by a former store checker alleging claims of wrongful termination and retaliation, sex discrimination, defamation and invasion of privacy.
Representing leading vendor of red light camera systems in a statewide class action brought by California drivers who received traffic tickets under Cal. Bus. & Prof. Code Section 17200.
Defending consumer class actions lawsuits alleging deceptive and unfair business practices in several states.
