Karen J. Mathis is a partner in the Denver office of McElroy, Deutsch, Mulvaney & Carpenter, LLP. Ms. Mathis received her Bachelor of Arts degree (cum laude, phi beta kappa) from the University of Denver in 1972, and her law degree from the University of Colorado School of Law in 1975. She received an honorary Order of the Coif from the University of Colorado in 2002 and honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Sienna College in May 2003, the Sturm Law School at the University of Denver in May 2005, Michigan State University in May 2006, and Southwestern School of Law in May 2006. A member of the Colorado and International Women's Forum, she has been honored as an outstanding attorney by the Denver and Colorado Bar Associations, the University of Colorado, and the University of Albany School of Law.
Ms. Mathis has been active in the American Bar Association for more than 25 years. She is the Immediate Past President of the Association. She served as Chair of the Commission on Women in the Profession from 1997 - 2000. She was the Association's second highest officer, Chair of its House of Delegates, from July 2000 until August 2002. She served as Chair of the 30,000 member ABA General Practice, Solo and Small Firm Section in 2002-2003. She is a member of the Denver, Colorado, and American Bar Associations. She belongs to the ABA Sections on General Practice, Real Property, Probate and Trust, and Taxation. She is admitted to the state and federal courts in Colorado, the U.S. Tax Court, the U.S. Supreme Court and the U.S. Court of Military Appeals. Ms. Mathis has also been named as a Super Lawyer in Colorado for 2008.
Ms. Mathis concentrates her practice in commercial and business law, representing national financial institutions, leasing companies, credit card corporations, and individuals with substantial net worth in the areas of business, corporate, bankruptcy, commercial litigation, estate and trust planning and probate law. She has been appointed by Colorado District Courts to serve as Receiver for assets valued at $250 million, and she is the co-author of West Practice's Rule 66 Chapter on Receivers.
She has spoken and written on estate planning issues, receiverships, and the status of women in the legal profession. |
