Since joining Foley Hoag, Justin Saif's litigation experience and work for clients has focused on complex civil litigation, including commercial disputes, securities litigation, and professional liability matters involving lawyers and accountants. He has represented both plaintiffs and defendants in state and federal court. Although prepared to go to trial, Justin has developed negotiation strategies leading to favorable settlements for clients in several matters, including land use and construction disputes.
Justin is actively involved in the firm's pro bono program, including successful representation of asylum seekers from the Democratic Republic of Congo and elsewhere in Immigration Court. He has also represented in federal court a non-profit organization working with and on behalf of immigration detainees.
Pro bono litigation was also a strong focus for Justin during law school, when he worked at the MacArthur Justice Center, a public interest firm connected with the University of Chicago Law School's clinical program. Issues in which he was involved there included administrative law matters, civil suits following wrongful convictions, Supermax prison conditions litigation, and the Guantanamo Bay litigation (Rasul v. Bush). Justin also participated in preparing amicus briefs in support of certiorari in habeas proceedings (Medellin v. Dretke) following the decision of the International Court of Justice on consular notification rights of foreign nationals arrested in the U.S.
Before attending law school, Justin worked as a paralegal for a boutique civil litigation and criminal defense firm in Boston, where he assisted with cases ranging from employment discrimination and various tort claims to murder and large drug conspiracies.
