Julie Chosy is a litigation and trial attorney in Faegre & Benson’s intellectual property group. She practices principally in intellectual property litigation, with a particular focus on trademark, trade secret, and patent infringement issues. The focus of Julie’s practice is on the representation of companies and institutions in the medical technology fields. Among Julie’s representative matters are the following: Played an important role in the firm’s representation of the University of Minnesota in patent litigation against Glaxo Wellcome over the antiviral drug Ziagen. The resulting settlement created the most lucrative licensing agreement ever established for a public university, estimated at more than $300 million. The Ziagen case is reportedly the second largest case in Minnesota history after the tobacco litigation. The Wall Street Journal reported the University of Minnesota has won the largest settlement of a patent infringement case of any U.S. university. Has represented Zimmer Spine (formerly Spine-Tech), the nation’s leading spinal implant company, in the company’s intellectual property litigation for nearly a decade. This representation included a two week patent infringement jury trial in Memphis in late 2000 against U.S. Surgical in which Spine-Tech sought $74 million in pre-trebled damages. The case, and a co-pending case in which Spine-Tech sought over $100 million in pre-trebled damages, settled pursuant to a confidential settlement after the jury found liability and Spine-Tech presented its damages evidence. Currently part of the legal team representing Guidant Corporation against its competitors in multi-patent infringement litigation relating to cardiac rhythm management devices (e.g., pacemakers, implantables). Julie also played a significant role in damage assessment as part of the trial preparation team in the Exxon Valdez litigation.
