Experience:
Julian Roskill is Head of our London Employment group and Co-Chair of our Global Employment Group. He has more than 30 years experience as an employment lawyer and has for many years been regarded as one of the leading employment lawyers in the UK.
His focus is on both advisory and dispute work for employers, particularly at a strategic level, and on advising senior executives.
His advisory experience includes drafting service agreements and dual contracts; advising on senior appointments (both executive and non-executive) and self-employment arrangements; advising on changing employment terms and severance packages; advising on the moves of key employees and team moves; advising on major disciplinary investigations and collective consultation; advising on outsourcing (global and national) and business transfers; and advising on European law measures affecting UK employers.
His litigation experience includes representing employers in legal proceedings, particularly on enforcing restrictive covenants and in mediations.
Julian is a member of the Employment Sub-Committee of the City of London Solicitors Company which he chaired from 1996 to 2001. Apart from client work, he speaks at and regularly chairs seminars. He also writes on a variety of employment topics for business publications. He helps clients with management training and is a qualified mediator.
Julian is regularly named as a Leading Individual in independent legal directories and Chambers UK 2008 notes in its commentary, "'A pleasure to deal with because he is so responsive,' head of the London employment group and co-chair of the global employment outfit Julian Roskill 'really knows what he's doing, '" while the UK Legal 500 (2007) notes that he " . . . combines 'knowledge of the detail of the legislation' with an 'ability to cut to the chase and provide sound practical advice. '" In its previous edition the publication noted that "his 'main strength' is his ability to 'cut through to the main issues. '" Julian is also described by Chambers UK (2007 edition) as a "strategic thinker with a good team around him." Julian's other endorsements include "a leading employment lawyer," "pragmatic," "not known for taking points unless they are warranted," and as "an immensely experienced practitioner" with a "clear vision" for his team.
Julian joined Mayer Brown International in 1986 and has been Head of the London office's Employment practice since 1988.
