Judith Bruce Biography :

Judith Bruce is a senior associate and the director of the Population Council’s Gender, Family, and Development Program. Since joining the Council in 1977, she has developed and coordinated programs and policy-oriented research related to the social and economic development of adolescents (particularly girls), women's roles and status, gender relations, intra-family dynamics, and quality of reproductive health care. Bruce has written and lectured extensively in these areas, and also on the subjects of population policy, investments in children, family and partnership dynamics, and women's access to and control of resources inside and outside of the household. Prior to joining the Population Council as an associate, she worked as a consultant for the US Department of State and the international division of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

A graduate of Harvard University, Bruce has received several honors for her work, including the Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Field of Women in Development in 1993 from the Association of Women in Development. She has been a member of the Council on Foreign Relations for nearly 30 years and served on the advisory committees for the Overseas Development Council, the Environmental Change and Security Project of the Woodrow Wilson Center, and the Grace Church School.
