Judith Levy Biography :

Judith Levy is Director of the Department of Social Work and Chair of the Ethics Committee at the Kennedy Krieger Institute. She is also an Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor, at the University of Maryland School of Social Work.

Biographical Sketch:

Judy Levy graduated from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, in 1967, with a B.A. in Psychology. In 1971 she received her Masters in Social Work from the University of Maryland School of Social Work. In 2002, she completed an M.A. in Applied and Professional Ethics. She has spent nearly her entire career in the field of developmental disabilities, with particular emphasis on maternal and child health. She has worked at the Kennedy Krieger Institute since 1975, first as a clinician, then as an administrator directing the Social Work Department. From January, 1997 to January 1999 she served as the Associate Director of the University Affiliated Program at KKI. In 1986 she developed a therapeutic foster care program for children with disabilities as part of a state-wide effort in Maryland to improve the foster care resources for children with special needs. Of particular interest to her has been: coping and resilience of individuals with disabilities and their families; ethical issues pertaining to people with disabilities, e.g. access to and the practice of health care, informed consent for people with impaired decision making capacity.

Judy Levy has developed a fee-for-service mental health program in the Department of Social Work for people with disabilities and their families, especially those with severe physical disabilities and mental retardation. She has been the Chair of the Kennedy Krieger Ethics Committee for since 1988, studying ethical issues in the field of disabilities and health care. In 1997, as part of the educational responsibility of the Ethics Committee she developed a monthly Ethics Rounds.

She has a special interest in the production of videotapes as an instructional medium. She has produced two award winning films concerning children with disabilities and their families in collaboration with Audrey Leviton.

Research Summary:

In collaboration with a Social Work researcher from the School of Social Work at Catholic University, Judy Levy and Department staff are have conducted exploratory research on the psychosocial characteristics of parents and families of KKI patients to determine which families need increased psychosocial support, problem solving and resource finding. This is not yet published.
