Law Practice Jordan Rossen is Of Counsel in the Labor practice at Meyer, Suozzi, English & Klein, P.C. Mr. Rossen joined the firm in 1998 and concentrates his practice in labor and employment law. Mr. Rossen assists in securing unemployment insurance for thousands of laid-off workers throughout New York and Ohio, writes briefs opposing arbitration in non-union corporate disagreement cases and in defending unions in duty of fair representation-civil rights cases. Mr. Rossen also provides fellow Meyer, Suozzi, English & Klein attorneys and clients with sound, seasoned counsel.Professional Profile Mr. Rossen has principally specialized in labor and employment law since 1960. Before joining Meyer, Suozzi, English & Klein in 1998, Mr. Rossen held diverse positions including: 1960 - 1962 Associate with Detroit law firm Sullivan, Elmer, Eames and Moody 1962 - 1964 Associate with Detroit law firm Sugar & Schwartz 1964 - 1974 Assistant General Counsel - (UAW) United Auto Workers (international union) 1974 - 1983 Associate General Counsel - (UAW) United Auto Workers (international union) 1983 - 1998 General Counsel - (UAW) United Auto Workers (international union)During law school, Mr. Rossen worked as a summer law clerk for the UAW. While in college, he worked as a summer Field Examiner for the National Labor Relations Board in Detroit. Appointed General Counsel by UAW President Doug Fraser, Mr. Rossen served longer than any other UAW General Counsel. At the UAW, Mr. Rossen specialized in duty of fair representation and civil rights cases, union ethical practices and Unemployment Insurance law. He has taught classes in these areas for union representatives, lawyers and students.Professional Accomplishments & Appointments Mr. Rossen has also served as General Counsel of the Michigan Health and Social Security Research Institute, Inc. from 1965 until 1974, and as a Director of the UAW Job Training Corporation. He testified on Unemployment legislation before committees in Indiana, Michigan and New York, and before a Congressional Committee. He has litigated before State and Federal agencies and courts, including the United States Supreme Court. More notable cases have included the Michigan Supreme Court’s invalidating the Workers’ Compensation offset against Unemployment Insurance; among the first rulings by State and Federal Courts that women could not be denied unemployment benefits due to pregnancy; and the Supreme Court’s holding that women of childbearing age could not be kept out of certain jobs because of exposure to safe levels of lead. From 2000 - 2004, Mr. Rossen worked part-time as Professor of Labor Studies at Wayne State University in Detroit teaching:Union Representatives: Duties, Dangers and Defenses. Mr. Rossen's additional appointments include:Case Editor and then Editor of the Michigan Bar Labor Section newsletter (1960-1964)President of the Michigan Young Democrats (1963-1965)Chair of Detroit and Michigan Americans for Democratic Action (1966-1968)Democratic Party Voter Registration Chair (1967)Managing campaigns and leading election day work in non-partisan and partisan elections (1965-1990)From 1971 through 1975, Mr. Rossen authored several articles on Unemployment Insurance law for the Wayne State Law Review annual survey. He received Detroit’s Human Rights Award in 1978, recognizing his women’s rights cases, and was presented with the United Auto Workers Solidarity Award in 1990. Additionally, in autumn of 2004, Mr. Rossen was honored at Wayne State University (Detroit, MI) during the opening of Hear Me Roar: Women and Social Justice, a Women’s Rights advocacy exhibition. The exhibit represented significant advocates over the last two hundred and fifty years, and Mr. Rossen was the only man honored in the entire exhibit.Professional & Military Affiliations Mr. Rossen has been a member of the American, Federal, National and Wolverine Bar Associations, American Trial Lawyers, National Lawyers Guild, Women Lawyers of Michigan, Congress of Labor Union Women, National Organization of Women and the Michigan Unemployment Insurance Advisory Council. He was a Board Member of the AFL-CIO Lawyers Committee from 1983 until 1998. Mr. Rossen has been a member of the National Association of Administrative Law Judges since 1978; the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers since 1997; a life member of the Sixth Circuit Judicial Conference since 1999; and Board of the Jewish Labor Committee since 1990.During 1959, Mr. Rossen was on active duty at Fort Dix, New Jersey, with the Massachusetts Army Reserves. He later served with the Michigan Army Reserves and National Guard until he was honorably discharged in 1966.Admissions Mr. Rossen is admitted to practice in State and Federal Courts in New York and Michigan, as well as in the United States Supreme Court and United States Courts of Appeals for the Third, Sixth, Seventh and District of Columbia Circuits.
