John Shoemaker Biography :

John Shoemaker received his BA with majors in Political Science and Business from Hanover College and his MBA from Indiana University. John continues to support his alma maters in a number of capacities. As a Trustee with Hanover College, he serves on the Long Range Planning and Building & Grounds committees. For Indiana University, he is a member on the Dean’s Advisory Council, the CIO Information Technology Advancement Council, and the Advisory Committee of the Indiana University Johnson Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. John is on the Board of Directors for SonicWALL, Inc., serving on committees for Compensation, Strategic Planning Audit and chairs the Governance committee. John has held executive management positions within the hi-tech industry for over 35 years. During his 21 years with Xerox Corporation, John held a number of critical executive positions. As Vice President of Group Operations, John was responsible for all staff functions for $2 billion business including finance, business alliances, mergers and acquisitions, marketing, business strategy and customer relations; and accountable for Electronics Division and Special Information Systems Division. As Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing in the Printing Systems division, John was responsible for management of $1.5 billion electronic printing business, including P&L, business strategy, business alliances, mergers and acquisitions, sales coverage, OEM sales, product strategy. John played a key leadership role in the Xerox Quality Movement including being a member of the Malcolm Baldridge Team and worked with Fuji Xerox in winning the Deming Quality Award in Japan. During his 14 years with Sun Microsystems, Inc., John held many critical positions including Vice President of Worldwide Operations, Chief Quality Officer, and Executive Vice President and General Manager of Computer Systems. As Vice President and General Manager of the Enterprise Desktop and Server Systems, John was responsible for over 60% of Sun Microsystems Revenue/Profit. John led Sun into major new markets in commercial enterprises from low-end workgroup sources to Data Centers, plus high performance computing. John led the acquisition of Cray BSD from SGI, which led to one of the most successful revenue lines in Sun Microsystems history. As an Executive Vice President, John’s was responsible for setting strategy, business management, P&L responsibility and authority for $12B in revenue which included all Sun hardware and systems products. John played a key role in the Sun Leadership Institute which focuses on increasing the skills of high potential VP’s at Sun Microsystems. John coached teams in solution of business problems, mentored attendees on development of individual leadership style, values, and interaction with external stockholders like Wall Street, press and industry analysts. Additionally, he guided director training sessions teaching leadership styles and values and discussing current business challenges and issues.
