Dr. John Devlin received both his bachelor’s degree and Ph.D. in Organic chemistry from Queens University in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Following two successful Post Doctoral appointments at The University of Alberta, Canada and at Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia, Dr. Devlin joined the development staff at First Mississippi Corporation in Jackson, Mississippi. It was here that Dr. Devlin developed his understanding of large scale chemical manufacture and the factors affecting overall cost and scalability of chemical processes. In 1994 John moved to QCi, the cGMP arm of First Mississippi in Dayton Ohio as Director of R+D and QC. Here John learned the regulatory side of chemical and pharmaceutical manufacture. In 1997 John moved on to Nycomed Amersham in Albany, New York as Director of R+D. Nycomed Amersham had a thriving contract manufacturing business making active pharmaceuticals for such companies as Sanofi, Pfizer, Merck and Wyeth Ayerst. John was part of the Senior Management team that engineered a Management Buyout of the Albany site in 1999 from Nycomed which resulted in the formation of a new company, Organichem. Following a highly successful three years in which sales of Organichem were grown from approximately US$40M to US$85M with corresponding increase in EBITDA from US$3M to approx US$15M, Dr. Devlin returned to Australia and formed his own consultancy company, DEVCHEM Pty Ltd, where he has worked with many small Australian biotech companies giving them advice on development, scale up and manufacture of their leading drug candidates. He is a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry and the American Chemical Society. At Progen, Dr. Devlin is responsible for overseeing all manufacturing operations in general and the current and future production of PI-88 in particular. Central to his focus is the preparation of the Chemistry, Manufacturing and Controls (CMC) part of the New Drug Application (NDA) for PI-88 that Progen will be submitting to the FDA as PI-88 progresses towards registration. |
